What Caused Stock Market To Crash >?

From Wiki i have read that the stock market crash in 2008 was due to failures of major financial institutions of the America, mainly due to the exposure of securities packaged sub-prime loans and credit default swaps issued to ensure these loans and their transmitters found himself quickly into a global crisis, which led to a number of bank failures in Europe and the impairment of the shares (stock) and raw materials worldwide.
But why it caused a global depression ?
